Full of Favor

Gabriel’s words to Mary show us that God’s favor means that He will fill the hungry with good things, even when that seems impossible. The power of God fills barren wombs, even virgin wombs, in order to place a Son on David’s empty throne, so that He can fill a hungry world with righteousness and peace. God favor means that He fills the hungry and the empty with Jesus.

This is the message of Luke chapter 1, the message of the gospel, the message of the incarnation, and the message of the Lord’s Table. God invites you to bring your empty mouths and your empty hearts here to be filled with Jesus, the true bread and the true drink.

This is the wonder of the Lord’s Supper: God comes down to this table to show you His favor. You should respond to that news like Mary: at first, you should be greatly troubled and afraid. Who are you to eat with God? And how can bread and wine possibly carry the weight of holiness into your heart?

But hear heaven’s answer to your fears and your questions: Who are you to eat with God? You are His favored ones, chosen in Christ, invited here by Jesus Himself.

And how can bread and wine fill you with Jesus? The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. God gives you Jesus through bread and wine by the Spirit’s power, for nothing is impossible with God.

So come now with faith, you servants of the Lord, and share in this holy meal according to His Word.
